I have a friend who became my roommate. We had a verbal agreement where he was to pay me $100 a week and half of the utilities and in addition would do yard work. He moved in in March 2009 and paid me the first month's rent without utilities (the check did not note rent nor did I provide him with a receipt). He has not given me any money since. We are both unemployed and receiving unemployment. I have asked him for the rent, he has given me no response and not money. On August 1, 2009, I requested that he find new living arraignments, and I gave him 'till mid-September to leave. He has done nothing and continues to be a financial burden to me. At this point I just want him out of my house. My utilities have tripled, and after my unemployment, and all my bills, I am at a serious financial deficit. How do I get him out of my house as quickly as possible?

Massachusetts law prohibits self-help eviction (throwing your roommate and his/her belongings out on the lawn).  There are serious penalties for those who try self-help evictions and, as far as I know, that prohibition applies to roommate situations as well.  Accordingly, you need to properly serve a 14 day notice to quit (for non-payment of rent) or a 30 day notice to quit (eviction for other or no reason) and go to court.   This answer assume you have some kind of sub-lease agreement (oral or written that the housing court will recognize).  In other cases, where the roommates are more or less equal partners, you should get the landlord to serve the notice to quit and evict the undesirable roommate.  Good luck.
