My grandmother just passed away and either she didn't have a will or she hid it really well. Can you tell me the Massachusetts law or code we should look at for this situation?

Sorry about your grandmother. When a person dies without a will, the law in Massachusetts says she died intestate, meaning her probate property must be distributed to the heirs-at-law (the decedent’s closest living relatives as determined by statute) in accordance with the Massachusetts laws of intestacy.
Figuring out who gets what under MA law might require reference to more than one statute or section. As an example, if your grandmother had a spouse and children, Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 190, Section 1, together with Chapter 190, Section 3, would require the court to distribute one half of her real and personal property to the spouse and the rest to your grandmother's children. Good luck, and please tell your friends about The Forum.
