A pitbull who was off leash at the park attacked my friend's dog, resulting in a couple of thousand dollars in vet bills. What is the legal process for getting compensation from the owner? If possible, the owner of the attacked dog would like to do all the paperwork because a lawyer would be a expense which could be difficult to afford. Or would the pitbull owner be required to pay the other owner's legal fees in addition to the vet bill?

Dog bite damages
If you have $X in damages as a result of the dog bite, and the owner is willing to pay you that amount, then you may be satisfied with that fair resolution and take the money. End of story. However, if you have to deal with an insurance company, you should contact an attorney. There are many posts on this site, such as the one linked to here, dealing with the dog bite laws in Massachusetts. Read through them for more information. Good luck.
