I was a stay at home parent for many years. I now have a disability that keeps me from working. Can I get SSDI or any other benefits?

Eligibility for SSDI

SSDI is like an insurance program that workers pay into while they are working.  You can follow this link for a discussion about eligibility for SSDI.  In a nut shell, if you don't have a work history, you cannot qualify for SSDI.  However, you may be able to qualify for SSI, a needs based program, or you may be able to receive SSDI benefits "through" the work history of another person, as when a widow collects survivor's benefits.  Talk to a disability attorney for more information about what types of benefits you may be able to receive.
