I was working in construction but got laid off last week. Can anyone get unemployment compensation or are there some rules that might disqualify me? I worked for five years at the same company. Thanks

The Massachusetts unemployment compensation law is laid out in MA General Laws Chapter 151A. With some exceptions (such as commissioned sales employees and consultants) workers are eligible for unemployment compensation if they lost their job without fault, are able to work and are actually out looking for work.
Some of the factors considered are: (1) Did you leave your job voluntarily, without good cause attributable to your employer; (2) Were you fired for deliberate misconduct or violation of a company rule; (3) Were you suspended because you broke company rules or regulations; (4) Did you leave your job because you were convicted of a felony or misdemeanor; (5) Are you unable to work or unable to actively seek employment; (6) Are you unemployed because you are participating in a work stoppage due to a labor dispute; (7) Have you refused an offer of suitable employment; and (8) Are you working full-time, either self-employed or for an employer.
As with most things in life, there are exceptions and caveats to the general rule, but I am guessing you will qualify. For specific questions about eligibility, you can call the Office of Labor and Workforce Development at 617-626-6800.
