Me and my boyfriend have lived together like husband and wife for over six years. Our credit and money situation is in the toilet and we think one or both of us should file bankruptcy. Do we need to be married to file jointly or is there some kind of like common law marriage that would allow us to file a joint bankruptcy? Thanks.

In order to file a joint bankruptcy petition you and your boyfriend would have to be married. As an aside, Massachusetts does not recognize common law marriage.
There isn't necessarily any advantage to filing a joint bankruptcy petition. It is possible that it may be better for one of you to file while the other does not. Obviously, I cannot make any suggestions on that issue because the best solution will depend on the facts of your case, and I do not know your financial situations.
