deposit left before lease.....

MA Landlord and Tenant Law Questions and Answers

I looked at an apt March 3rd, liked it, and left a half month deposit on March 4th (for march 15-31) prior to seeing a lease. Verbally, the money I left them was to 'hold' the apartment, so i gave them half the full rent ($875.00), and a few days later they did pull the listing off craigslist.

I was emailed the lease March 8th, and confirmed receipt the morning of the 9th. Upon review, I do not want the apartment, and have told them so tonight, March 10th.

While I know it might be difficult to get back, what are my legal options (or theirs) regarding the full amount of money I left them. Can they legally KEEP it? Can they keep half? Am I legally entitled to get it all back?

Please help..asap.
