Due to several personal circumstances, I had accumulated over 75000 in credit card debt. I was having difficulty keeping up with payments and signed on with a debt consolidation company.(I had considered bankruptcy but thought this way would not be as damaging to my credit). I have been signed up with the company for one year and so far they have settled only one credit card. I have now received 3 court summons which I have had to respond to. One credit card company had agreed to a payment plan so I didn't go to court but now have received notice for a settlement hearing I was wondering what my recourse was & if I should now hire representation or if there was a free legal advise number I could utilize as I don't think I could afford an attorney. Thank you.

debt consolidation or bankruptcy
I appreciate your desire to preserve your credit rating. However, at this point, that priority may have to take a back seat or may, based on the actions your creditors have taken, be a lost cause. I'm just guessing here because, obviously, I am not familiar with your situation. You should understand that most bankruptcy attorneys will offer a free consultation to help you understand your options and whether the attorney may be able to help you. You may also be able to pay for the attorney over a period of time. If that doesn't work for you, simply Google legal aid in Massachusetts for links to local legal aid groups. Some of these might be able to assist you. Good luck.
