During a phone conversation last week, my attorney in my medical malpractice case said that the biggest single expense I will have to pay for out of any judgment or settlement will be the cost of my expert witness. But she said it was too soon to know how much it would cost. How much do you think they get?

In any type of litigation, the cost of an expert witness is often linked to what the person makes for an hour of work "in the real world" If your attorney needs to call a physician as an expert witness (as is usually required in medical malpractice cases) she will be hiring one of, if not the, most expensive types of expert witnesses, because doctors usually make pretty good money when not in court.
Typically, the hourly rate for medical malpractice experts will be anywhere from $300 to $3000, in extreme cases, but that information (even if I could give you a more definitive number) is not terribly helpful because we do not know how many hours the expert will testify or be "on the clock." That, I assume, is why your attorney could not answer you. As you get closer to actually hiring the expert, your attorney should be able to give you a more useful estimate of both the hourly rate of your expert(s) and the number of hours her services will be required.
