I'm in the middle of trying to get my SSDI disability payments and I already sent in my medical records when I made my initial claim. Now social security says I have to do a consultative examination. If that's just another doctor examination why can't I just use my own doctor?

I'm not privy to the status of your application for disability benefits and I have not read any of the correspondence between you, your doctor, and the Social Security Administration. But I can say that, typically, if the SSA requires more information to evaluate your claim and make a decision about your disability, the original treating professional (your doctor or specialist) will be the first choice to provide that additional exam and/or information, as long as he or she is qualified, has all the equipment required for the exam, and is able and willing to perform the exam within a set time and for a set fee.
However, if the above requirements are not met or if, for some other specified reason, the SSA believes a different person should administer the exam or test, then it may decide that a consultative examination is necessary. In that case, the Social Security Administration will schedule an appointment with the doctor or specialist and notify you of the time and date. If you are represented by an attorney, you certainly should discuss this process with her. Good luck. For more information, visit our MA Social Security Discussion Forum.
