My employer (a big box store located in many states) often has me come in for only 4.5 hours in a day. This is a pain in the butt for many reasons but it also means I do not get a break. My boss says no breaks because MA law says I need to work a longer stretch to be entitled to a break for a snack of meal. Also, some times I go in and the manager tells me I can leave after two hours. Is that legal?

Your question raises two issues. First, under Massachusetts law, you are entitled to a meal break of 1/2 hour if you work over six hours. So you would not be entitled to a break. However, MA law requires your employer to allow you to work (or to pay you for) three hours if you are schedule to work at least three hours. So, if you are scheduled to work 4.5 hours and you show up for work, your employer must pay you for 3 hours, even if they send you home after 2 hours. Hope that helps.
