Collecting social security after divorce

I've been married to my husband for nearly 16 years and am 63 years old now. Sadly, we're going to get a divorce and I was wondering about how this would impact my social security benefits. I don't have a lot of other retirement funds available so this is a key issue for me. Do you know anything about that?

Social security benefits after divorce

That is a good question, and you should definitely discuss the issue with your divorce lawyer before moving forward with the divorce.  You did not discuss your work history, but if you would have been entitled to collect social security based on your own work and earnings history, then divorce will not change that.  You can still collect, of course.

If you did not work, but were married for at least ten years (as you were) to someone who did, after your divorce you may be able to collect social security benefits based on your husband's work history.  Generally, you will not be able to collect more than 50% of your husband's benefit. You should keep in mind that, if you remarry, you can no longer collect social security benefits based on your former spouse's work record.  Hope that helps.  Good luck.
