Closing date on real estate sale in MA

In Massachusetts is there any legal requirement about the closing date chosen by the seller and buyer of real estate? Can it be a very short period like a week after the signing of the purchase and sale agreement?

Editor's Response

No, there is no law regulating that aspect of the purchase and sale agreement.  We are, after all, talking about a contract, and the parties are free to agree to any date that works for them.  Typically, the issue is how long it will take the parties to prepare for the actual closing.  The seller may need time to find a new home and move, and the buyer will usually need time to line up financing and to have the house inspected.  And there are certain legal requirements, like the smoke and carbon monoxide detector inspection, that may slow things down.  Hope that helps.  For more information about home sales, visit our Massachusetts Real Estate Law Discussion Forum.
