I have to evict a tenant on a well maintained property I've had for years for failure to pay rent. But now I can't find my rental permit. Darn it, I feel stuck, if I didn't get a rental permit for this jerk (lied several times to me about rent check and works on side and is trying to get SSI, etc) what can I do now?

Certificate of occupancy or compliance or rental permit.

I will assume that a "rental permit"  is your town's version of the certificate of occupancy or certificate of compliance.  If you actually got one, there should be a record of it and a copy at your inspectional services office.  If not, then you just have to hope the issue does not come up.  Worst case scenario, the housing court may fine you and/or force you to get the certificate before allowing you to proceed with the eviction.  However, the other option (letting the guy live rent free in perpetuity) does not seem like a good idea.  Depending on the amount involved, you may want to talk to a local landlord tenant attorney to see if she has any insight into how the local housing court would react if this information came up.  Good luck.
