Can non citizens get social security SSI benefits?

Hello. I'm a legal resident but not a citizen of the US. Does that mean I am eligible for SSI benefits or must I become a citizen first? Thank you.

SSI for non-residents

Lawful immigrants to the United States, including resident aliens, may qualify for Social Security benefits if they meet a condition that allows aliens to receive SSI.  There are several such "conditions" including if the non-resident was lawfully admitted for permanent residence (like you) and has 40 qualifying quarters of work.

For more information, you can contact the Social Security Administration Hot-line at 800-772-1213, or contact a local Social Security Benefits Attorney.  And for more general information about SSI visit our MA Social Security Discussion Forum.
