Can I get MA unemployment benefits after applying for SSDI

Can you receive unemployment benefits after you have applied for social security disability? My career was very specialized and it would be a lightning strike if I ever got another offer... but my whole life has been a lightning strike so I never close the door of possibility, you know? So I guess, theoretically, I could work in my chosen career again, but that would really be the only employment I am capable of, as my condition makes it impossible for me to know when I am well enough to work on a sustained basis. It's really a day to day thing. I can work if someone doesn't mind having long term deadlines and doesn't mind me working from home... I tried to have a "regular" job earlier this year, but I literally worked myself into anemia and had to quit. I just couldn't keep up. It was AWFUL, and very depressing to realize that I could no longer be expected to be somewhere on a daily basis. I'm only 44 for crying out loud. I don't want to do anything wrong. I've only got one more week of my unemployment extension left, but I don't know if I should put in for it. Any ideas? Thanks.

Editor's Response

On the surface, it would appear highly unlikely that you could satisfy the Massachusetts Unemployment Benefit requirement that you you able to work and actively looking for work while also satisfying the Social Security Administration's requirement that you have disability that prevents you from working.  However, both of these 'rules' have exceptions based on individual facts and the timing of the claims.  For that reason, you should contact an attorney who does SSDI work and explain to him or her the particulars of your situation.  Many of these attorneys offer free consultations.  Good luck.
