Buying and registering a moped in MA

I'm in the market for a moped for my 15 year-old son. Is there a new law in Massachusetts that requires me to register a moped like it was a motorcycle?

Editor's Response

There is a new law, but, depending on the type of moped you purchase, it may not effect you.  Chapter 523 of the Acts of 2008 amended Massachusetts General Laws chapter 85 by recognizing "limited use" or "low speed motor vehicles" as a separate class.

If you purchase a moped with an engine capacity that does not exceed 50cc and with a top speed of 30 miles per hour, all you have to do is get a registration sticker from the Registry of Motor Vehicles.  However, if you purchase a "limited use vehicle,"  something that goes faster than 30 mph but no faster than 40 mph, then it needs to be titled, insured, and registered with the RMV.  Also, your son will not be able to operate the vehicle without a driver's license or motorcycle license.

I am willing to guess that the moped dealer will be able to give you additional guidance and help you select a product your son can use.  Good luck.
