I have a few questions. First, is it legal for the board to "hand select" their members, ie "You can only get on the board by being invited by a current member"? Can open elections, when held, place the unit number on the ballot? Can there be more candidates for the board on the ballot than just the ones who are going to be on the board anyway, ie "if you're on the ballot you are automatically on the board"? Can the board restrict any unit owner from conversing with any other unit owner or neighbor of the property? Do the meetings of the board need to be announced where/when they are to be held? Can the board withhold meeting minutes from all unit owners? Can the board hold "secret" or "private" meetings regarding the condo operations? Can all the members of the board have signing rights on the board's checks? I know this is a great many questions, but I am very frustrated. The board chairperson is useless and two of the board members are running the place into the ground. It feels more like a prison compound than a condo complex! One of these two board members has allowed the removal of shrubbery so the person with the parking space next to it can have more room, dictates who speaks to whom in the complex, creates parking spaces for the convenience of a friend/unit owner (also on the board) in a fire lane. I could go on for hours. I have also heard this person defaming a family member of a unit owner. Please advise me on this situation!
