being sued in small claims court by landlord

My former landlord is suing me for back rent.
But he had me making out payment to another name. Claiming he sold it to this woman. Wouldn't the new person sue me not my landlord previous. If funds are owed. For i owe name he claimed he sold it to. Not him. Also is there a form i can file to show my inability to pay? I am on soc sec and my money limited. I get 1100 amonth, where i live now my rent 1000. Also he is suing for clean up wouldn't landlord i made checks out to now sue me.
And not the previous just need little insight to my rights. I also had work done to show i replace water heater. It was in winter one year, water all over the trailer. I was unable to contact landlord so i paid for all emergency services. Can I offset this with what is owed. Cause it comes to more then what i owe the landlord. And water created lot of damage, I paid for all work done. For I needed hot water and also tried to prevent more damage to clean up fast. To prevent more damage inside trailer water seeping everywhere. Cause if i was making my rent checks out to one name does a differnt name have right to sue for rent owed when informed he sold it .Thank you on any insight ot this matter.

Your old landlord could sue you to collect rent that was owed to him before he sold the unit.  I would definitely bring all the paperwork regarding the repairs you had done and tell the court you want file a counterclaim.  The rules of procedure at small claims court are fairly relaxed, and usually the court is willing to hear any relevant evidence.  Good luck, and please tell your friends about The Forum.
