Automatic homestead protection in MA?

I've been told that I don't need to worry about filing a declaration of homestead because the new homestead law has an automatic provision so I'm covered even if I don't file one. Is that correct?

Homestead in Ma

The new Massachusetts Homestead amendment does include automatic protection of up to $125,000 against many types of creditors. However, for the cost of a recording fee ($35), you can get up to $500,000 in protection by actually recording a declaration of homestead. This simple step is something that just about all attorneys recommend. You should file one.
