Any good (non-scam) alternatives to bankruptcy?

So . . . lost the job bills are piling up (including one late mortgage payment) and my wife's income alone is not going to do it for us. I want to try to avoid bankruptcy if I can but I get the feeling most of the "let us help you avoid bankruptcy" groups are just scams. Any thoughts?

Editor's Response

I think you would agree that the key to your situation is whether your financial issues are long-term or short-term.  In other words, is it possible for you to makes some changes and pull out of this (assuming you find a job or some other source of income), or have you stumbled into a financial mess that you cannot escape from without first eliminating all or part of your debt, perhaps through bankruptcy. To make that determination, you may need to talk to a neutral third party who can appraise your situation and help you choose a course.  That long-winded introduction gets us back to your question.

No, I don't think all credit counseling agencies are scams.  However, I have no experience with the various non-profit and for-profit agencies and companies that provide credit counseling, so I can offer no opinion about specific organizations.  However, the United States Department of Justice offers a list of approved credit counseling agencies.  Although most of the organizations on the list are located out of state, they should be able to assist you using the telephone and other modes of communication.  Good luck.
