My Dad who I haven't seen in years just died in Massachusetts. He never remarried. I got a letter from an attorney in MA that also included a notice of petition for probate of will. That's all. No other information. Does that mean I'm named in the will or that I'm going to inherit something under my dad's will? If so, what probate court should I talk to? I live in New Jersey so I can't really get up there too easily. Thanks for your help.

Am I named in the Will

As a child of the decedent, you are an "heir at law" are therefore required to get notice of the petition to allow you father's Will. That does not mean that you are named in the will - although you may be. The notice that you received will indicate the probate court before which the matter is pending. You can contact the court and someone there may be willing to help. But be forewarned that the Court is always short-handed. You can also contact the attorney that sent you the notice and request a copy of the Will. The Will is matter of public record at this point, so you should be able to get a copy.

Pay careful attention to the return date indicated in the notice sent to you. Although probate is designed to be a very open process, there are many deadlines. The intent is to keep the process moving, so do not wait too long to act. If you have any questions, you may need to consult with a local attorney who can guide you through the process.
