Almost 2 years now and the estate isn't settled, what are my options?

I'm 1 of 8 beneficiaries of my Father's estate. My oldest brother was appointed executor of the estate. My father's death occurred 7/31/09 and my brother still has not settled the estate. When questioned, he responds with excuses ranging from taxes to paperwork. The estate value is less than 500K and none of us really understand why this is taking so long. My brother hasn't been too inspired to complete this process. What I would like to know is what options do myself and the rest of my siblings have to get this process complete? Can we fire the executor and have someone else do this? Also, we have one sibling that doesn't get along with the rest of us, can that person do anything to make problems for all of us?

Removal of executor

Depending on the complexity of the estate, 21 months may not be an unreasonable wait.  Obviously, I'm not in a position to say for certain.  However, in MA, beneficiaries are entitled to request an accounting from the executor.  Similarly, you are entitled to seek to remove the executor of the estate.  I don't know what you mean about the other beneficiary making trouble for you.  He certainly has the right to oppose any move you make, such as if you attempt to remove the executor.  Good luck.
