I had a 12 month lease that expired on 9/30/2008.
The lease says that
"Unless terminated as hereinafter provided this lease shall be renewed for successive terms of Twelve (12) months each at the end of the initial term. Resident may terminate this agreement at the end of the term or at any time during any successive term by giving sixty (60) days written notice in advance to Management"
However, at the end of my term the management said it was not doing 12 month renewals, rather it was extending expiring leases month-to-month, but I was still required to give a 60 day notice. It seems to me that if I am month to month I should only be required to give 30 days notice. But they say it is just an extension of my current lease.
Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

They can't have it both ways. Either the lease renewed or it didn't. If they say the lease did not renew and you are a month to month tenant then the law only requires 30 day's notice.
